General local elections in B.C. are held every four years on the third Saturday in October. The next general local elections will be held on October 15, 2022.
General local elections are the most direct way for the public to influence their local government, school district or other local governance body by determining the individuals who then make decisions and govern on their behalf following general voting day.
General local elections include elections for municipal councils, regional district electoral areas, and boards of education.
School trustees are elected members of a board of education. School trustees represent the public and advocate for public education in their community. To find out more, please see the BCSTA Guide for School Trustee Candidates.
The 2022 general local elections education materials are now available online. Please visit www.gov.bc.ca/localelections for useful information about local elections and to download electronic versions of the guides, brochures, and video content (a list of all the materials can be found in the Appendix). Printed copies of select materials will also be sent in July for your reference and general public use.
